Visiting Teaching Moment

Dear Sisters,

I had an opportunity to receive training along with the other members of Relief Society Presidency this past month. It was a rewarding experience and led me to study more on the topic of Visiting Teaching.

A quote by Sister Mary Ellen Smoot gives the main reason for this change by saying: “My desire is to plead with our sisters to stop worrying about a phone call or a quarterly or monthly visit, and whether that will do, and concentrate instead on nurturing tender souls” (Daughters in My Kingdom, page 117) I would like to share one of the changes to Visiting Teaching that you will notice over the next few months.

Starting immediately, visiting teachers will be asked to report special needs and service given – in other words, their ministering. They will count their caring instead of counting a visit, a telephone call, or a letter that is sent. (Ensign, March 2012, Visiting Teaching: Understanding the Power of Ministering)

Visiting teaching supervisors may ask, “What ways did you find you were able to increase her faith, strengthen her home or family, or provide relief?” Examples of reports may be:

· We discussed the visiting teaching message and found that her daughter is struggling with… I have been praying for her daughter and called last week to see how they are doing. There hasn’t been a change and my companion and I are fasting for them this Sunday.

· Our visit was great. She is having company for spring break and we are watching her kids the Friday before so she can get any last minute stuff done before they come.

· She still doesn’t answer the phone or door when we try to make contact. Her neighbor, Janice, told me went on a cruise for a week this month. I plan on mentioning that in the next note I leave and my companion and I are praying to have the opportunity to meet her in person.

All confidential matters will continue to be reported to the Relief Society president.

Visiting Teaching may seem overwhelming, especially if you feel discouraged by visiting those who do not desire contact or who seem to dislike you. It helps me to remember that it is an inspired assignment from the Lord. I often feel inadequate in my attempts to serve but have felt strengthened by the testimonies of others. Daughters in My Kingdom, Chapter 7 contains many powerful examples of how we can make a difference through visiting teaching. I confess that a shed a few tears reading the stories of these women who learned to be more like our Savior and minister to others.

I have been blessed by many faithful visiting teachers and hope to be more like President Kimball’s wife, Camilla, who said the following about her efforts as a visiting teacher: “I have tried not to suppress any inclination to generous word or deed”.

Love,

Becki Wilcox

Lindon Cannery Information

Dear Subscribers,

There are several changes coming for the Lindon Cannery that we are planning for and working into our family canning procedures. As you notice these changes in procedure, we ask for your patience and attention to detail as several things may be different than what you are used to.

One change we will make is producing to our capacity instead of being driven by ordered amounts. The available time for Family Canning is becoming more and more limited so we need to use each production day to its full potential. This may alter what you are literally able to purchase even after you have placed your order. When registering for a shift, your order should be your complete, “desired purchase”, which we will then adjust to fit what is actually produced. You must put a number in the # of cases for each ordered amount even if the number is 0.

Another change we are trying during the next family canning opportunity is having you sign up for one shift, but be able to order some of each of the products being produced during the current family canning session. It won’t matter which product you work on, just that you work on one of the Family Canning days. Because we will not be driven by order amounts, we will be able to leave the schedule online for a longer period of time so you can make changes (cancellations, moves, etc.) to your scheduled shift as the need arises.

As a general guideline:
if your total order is over 9 cases, please sign up 2 people. (Not the same person on two shifts, but two different people.) Once you are signed up for a shift, please make a commitment to be there or find someone to take your shift. If shifts do not fill up, we may ask for volunteers to serve a 2nd shift.

The products being offered next are Raspberry Jam @ $23.40/case of 12 pint jars, Peach Jam @$21.00/case of 12 pint jars and Pancake Syrup @ $21.00/case of 6 half gallon jugs. Serving a shift will allow you to place an order for all 3 products. However, it will be important for you to fill your shift because you will only have one chance to work and be eligible to get any of these products.

The new inventory system being implemented in May by the Church will make it necessary for everyone to come back to pick up their product instead of being able to purchase the day of their shift. Thursday, May 17th or Friday, May 18th will be our pick-up days for this session. Please consider the pickup dates when signing up for your shift. Remember that after the pick-up days are passed, the product is not guaranteed to be available to you.

LINKS WILL BECOME ACTIVE ON SATURDAY, MARCH 31ST @ 7:00 A.M. Each link below represents a different day you can work in order to purchase the jam or syrup. Remember that you only need to sign up one time. You can go to the links to read the details of the shift, but you will not be able to schedule a shift until 7:00 am on Saturday.

Visiting Teaching Moment

From Vionna Kunz

I feel strongly about the VT program. Love the ladies we visit teach. I feel we get to understand their needs by going and being with them at their homes. Grow with them in the love and the concerns. They have for their families, their achievements, goals and desires. Without taking the time to go there we wouldn’t be able to be a part of that circle. And in turn they help me when I need them. This time, once again, they came to my house to receive the visint message because of my recent surgeries. They could wait a month or two but chose to come to my house to us. That’s what service really is. Our sisters, I hope look forward to our visit and in turn give us the blessing of sharing our lives with them. My partner is so very special to me, she works with my handicaps and makes me feel needed. We all need to feel needed. Bonnie Jacobs is that person!

There are two ladies in our ward who aren’t my visiting teachers but look out for me in many ways. Becky Boone cleans my walks, mows my lawns & weed eats and in general really puts forth an effort to look after me and my family. I feel the spirit she carries in my behalf. I know she’s busy, but radiates the Christ like love to me and others she’s around.

Cara Hall as well calls to check on me to see how I’m doing and to see what she can do to help me. She’s gone to the store many times and has brought in different food dishes for me to try. She stayed all night while Brad was in the hospital. She too radiates the Christ like love and service to me and my family. For this I’m very thankful. I’m thankful for the relief society program and for the opportunity it gives us to serve those around us.

I've also been blessed by many others who have brought by flowers, cards or just stopped by or called to check on my on my family. I'm so grateful to be surrounds by such loving friends.
