Relief Society Basketball

Hello Sisters,

I received an e-mail from our Stake Sports Director, Sister Quilter, who has asked that we begin making the following announcement for basketball:

Beginning January 11, 2012, Relief Society Basketball will be held each Wednesday evening from 8:30-10:00 p.m. at the stake center. Women of all ability levels and Young Women 16 and up are also invited to come and play. Come have some fun while you exercise!

Visiting Teaching Moment

My testimony of visiting teaching started small at 18 years old but has grown to one of deep appreciation and love for the program. It's really not about counting an actual visit for me each month. I have a deep love and and appreciation for the sisters I visit and those who visit me.

If you reflect on the purpose of visiting teaching, it makes complete sense. There is no way the Bishop, Relief Society President and other leaders can keep track of all the needs and concerns in the ward. How fitting that we are given small groups of people to have a stewardship over. We are the watchmen for each other. If visiting teaching didn't happen, how would we know how to serve and help each other? Such a big part of visiting teaching is also reporting how our sisters are doing...sometimes its the only way our needs are met by each other.

While I am far from perfect at this program (as Trina and Tricia can attest!) I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a visiting teacher. I understand it's meaning and the months I do get to visit with them, my love for them and visiting teaching grows. I also love the sisters who visit me and have made a lifelong friend through my visiting teacher in the ward! I'm grateful to be a part of this amazing ward and the influence each of you has in my life! Love you all!

Humanitarian Service Opportunity

Humanitarian Service Opportunity:

My Dad (Cara's) works for the LDS church. Please see below for this awesome service we can provide to the Philippines! If you are interested in donating, please drop the books off to my house before Dec 21st. Thank you!

We have been invited to help collect used and new children's picture books for a new library in the LDS Employment Resource Center in Manila, Philippines.

The missionaries in Manila are teaching English classes. Many students want to read to their families at home. The more English they hear, the better their chances for education to get them out of the poverty cycle. There are no lending libraries in the Philippines. The missionaries intend to establish a library, and make the books available to anyone in the area.

The books can be used picture books in good condition, or new ones. Paperback, hardback, and board books are welcome. They do not need Disney books as those are readily available in the Philippines already.

Please look through your shelves and see if you have some books you can share. A donation box is located in the break room on the first floor of Building Q and in the break room on the second floor of building S that is to the east of Britney's pod. The deadline for Donations is December 23.

Visiting Teaching Message: An Extensive Sphere of Action

The Lord, His Church, families, and communities need the influence of righteous women. In fact, Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught that “every sister in this Church who has made covenants with the Lord has a divine mandate to help save souls, to lead the women of the world, to strengthen the homes of Zion, and to build the kingdom of God.”1

Some sisters may wonder if they can accomplish such lofty aims. But as Eliza R. Snow (1804–87), second Relief Society general president, explained, “There is no sister so isolated, and her sphere so narrow but what she can do a great deal towards establishing the Kingdom of God upon the earth.” Sister Snow also taught that Relief Society was organized “for the accomplishment of every good and noble work.”

Participation in Relief Society enlarges our spheres of influence by giving each sister opportunities to build faith, to strengthen families and homes, and to provide service both at home and throughout the world. And fortunately, our efforts as individuals and as Relief Societies need not be large and overwhelming, but they should be deliberate and consistent. Righteous practices such as daily personal and family prayer, daily scripture study, and consistently magnifying Church callings will help increase faith and build the Lord’s kingdom.

To sisters who wonder if these seemingly quiet contributions make a difference, Elder Ballard affirms: “Every sister who stands for truth and righteousness diminishes the influence of evil. Every sister who strengthens and protects her family is doing the work of God. Every sister who lives as a woman of God becomes a beacon for others to follow and plants seeds of righteous influence that will be harvested for decades to come.”
